(Sacramento, CA)  If the kid in you remembers the first spark that lit up your learning, remembers the teacher that took extra time to encourage you, in fact— if you can recall the WAY you found to express yourself as an individual—then you know how much that shaped the person you became.

On May 2, student musicians from the Sacramento area will bring their A game in an BIG DOG evening of live blues and community.

With generous, joyous, dedicated hearts and hands, Sacramento Blues members are the backbone of just about every great Sacramento blues show. As an all volunteer non profit, SBS brings great talent to Sacramento, cultivates local blues musicians, and through Blues in the Schools (BITS)  Programs, builds emotionally intelligent, blues loving, student leaders of tomorrow. As emerging young blues-rock musician and 2018 BITS graduate Zach Waters said,
“During my time in Blues in the Schools, many positive things happened to me. I learned some life-long lessons in music, gained live playing experience, but most importantly I became part of a family.”   Here's Zach in his junior year (2017):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhnHZ7pkJwo

ABOUT BITS:

The BITS Program is multi-faceted according to the particular need. It can be a six week after school program culminating in a Blues Showcase in a local club . It can be a single presentation for students at a civic location like the Crocker Museum. It can be a Songwriting Competition in county-run schools that serve incarcerated youth, teens on probation and/or students expelled from their home districts—clearly, youth at risk who need a positive force in their lives.
Working with a consistent volunteer committee since 2004, BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS is the mission-based program of the Sacramento Blues Society (SBS). BITS is a major reason that the SBS was tapped for the 2014 “Keeping the Blues Alive” Award by The Blues Foundation, the international organization based in Memphis, Tennessee.

“The enthusiasm and camaraderie that students develop after they have been involved in Blues In The Schools last much longer than the six weeks that the students are in the program.”
– Steve Boettner, Music Teacher, Rosemont High School

BITS has years of success stories via school year programs where many music professionals including Capitol Public Radio’s Mick Martin, nationally known recording artist Jackie Greene, young charismatic blues harp/guitar star Kyle Rowland, producer/songwriter/guitarist Paris Clayton and singer/mentor Lisa Phenix come into the schools to perform and teach. The current After School BITS Program musicians (who are training our student bands for showcase) are Joe Lev(bass), Vincent Pantages (guitar--just accepted to Berklee School of Music); Matt Hevesh (guitar-Berklee grad and on the road with The Gold Souls); Larry Schiavone (drums) and Lew Fratis (guitar), both Sacramento music veterans, and Sandra Delores (vocal coach).

“I’ve been so sad because my mom died and left me and my Dad. Your music made me feel like a normal person again. I forgot for awhile
and felt like dancing and singing. Thank you, wonderful bluesmen.”
